Motivation is a feeling or urge that helps us to move forward in life; it is a power that causes a person to act towards a given desire or goal. It does not matter how successful or underachieved you are; nobody wakes up motivated every day. There are days you are up to the task or challenge, and there are some when you don’t even feel it.
The word motivation is a common word derived from the word ‘motive,’ and this means needs, wants, desires, or drives within the individuals. It is the inspiration of people to accomplish their goals. Motivation is what drives people to make things happen, but staying motivated isn’t always easy.
Please note that there are positive motivations and negative motivations.
Positive motivation focus on the positive things that will happen when you take action, and this could be short term or long term. An example of short term positive motivation could be: ‘Completing this assignment simply means I’m only a step away from being qualified.’ An example of the long term could be: ‘Completing my degree simply means I’m going to get the job of my dreams.’
Negative motivation focus on the negative backlash that will occur if you don’t take action. An example could be: ‘If I don’t complete this assignment today, I’ll fail my course.’
We are focusing on the positive energy in this post because our goal is to help you succeed in whatever you do.
The things that keep people motivated varies from one individual to another;
· Some are motivated by their friends or families
· Some by their current circumstances
· Some by their past
· Some by their desires
· Some by their passion
Motivation: Below are 7 ways to keep you Motivated;
1. Set short term and long term goals
At the beginning of every year or certain times in our lives, we set goals. Most times, we set the long term goals that could take a whole year or a few years to achieve. It is a good practice to set long term goals, but we also need to set short term goals.
An example of Long term goals could be, “I need to start and complete my Master’s degree this year” and an example of a short term goal could be, “I need to spend three hours every day studying my course work to complete my master’s degree this year”. It isn’t easy to achieve great things in life without setting goals, and setting them will help you stay motivated. If possible, start with more manageable tasks and work your way up to bigger ones.
2. Choose goals that capture your interest
It is important to choose goals that interest you because you are much more likely to stay motivated working towards something that you sincerely want to do or achieve, rather than what other people want for you. Millions of people out there are doing things because other people are doing them and end up getting frustrated. It is better to do something because you want to do it, instead of doing it because you want to avoid an outcome if you do not do it.
3. Learn more about your idea or goals daily
It is essential to learn more about your goal daily. The path towards achieving goals is not always easy and straightforward; you might hit some bumps on the way that drops your energy level and makes you less motivated. Read a book or blog, listen to podcasts, or watch videos about your goal; it will inspire and reinvigorate you. Reading, watching videos, listening to podcasts, and reading helps motivate and keeps you focused. Do this every day or as much as possible, especially when you’re not feeling motivated.
4. Put up your goals around the house
It is a great idea to put up your goals around the house, and it is as important as the idea and goal itself. Printing out and putting up your desired goals in large words/font size will serve as a constant reminder for you not to settle down in your comfort zone. Post it up on strategic places in your house or the areas you spend most of your time during the day. Ensure that you read them daily and meditate upon it. Spend at least one minute thinking about it and see yourself already achieving the goal. I call this the 60 seconds daily rule. You can change them from time to time to help you stay focused on it.
5. Have a positive mindset
Are you having negative thoughts about your goals or idea? Research has shown that happiness increases productivity. Get the negativity out of your life and fill the place with positivity. A positive attitude can help you to stay committed and become more successful. Staying positive is one of the best ways to motivate yourself, and you must try as much as possible to replace your negative thoughts with positive ones.
Having positive thinking and keeping your mind away from all forms of doom towards your idea will go a long way in ensuring success in the long run. It would be best if you tried to replace negative words with positive ones. For instance, “Impossible” can be substituted with “Possible.” Most often, even the most motivated of us can feel unmotivated in the face of some situations.
6. Plot and celebrate your progress
It is motivating if you can see evidence that you are making progress when you are working towards a goal. Monitor the development of what you have done and celebrate it. Draw or create a captivating visual representation of how you are progressing towards the goal you have set yourself. If possible, place them around your house and see them every day. Use rewards and promise yourself some reward each time you complete a step or task.
7. Get some peer pressure
Someone once said, “Show me your friends today, and I will tell you what you will become in two years.” Surround yourself with strongly motivated people, and you will end up where you want to be. When you are accountable to someone, you feel motivated and remain on track. Join motivated people, and it will increase your potential to become successful. Your cabinet and company predict your future. The best motivation is the association between motivated people.
Moreover, research has shown that over time you develop the eating habits, career aspirations, and health habits of those around you. If the people around you are less motivated, you can’t keep yourself motivated. So, it is essential to set yourself accountable to some friends or family members. It will keep you motivated and on track.
